• Millions of people live with severe chronic pain but cannot take treatment or it  seems that for them treatments do not work .
• The chronic pain conditions may result due to damage to body tissues ( nociceptive ) , damage to the nervous system ( neuropathic ) , or a mix of the two .
• For these people , now Prialt ( ziconotide ) intrathecal infusion is prescribed as a medicine to treat severe chronic pain . Ziconotide , a venom - based painkiller is now available commercially as Prialt .
• It is a non - narcotic pain reliever that works by blocking pain signals from the nerves to the pain and extracted from the venom of the cone snail ( Conus magus ) .
• This cone venom is the mixture of various conotoxins ( some of these conotoxins are fatal to humans ) .
• Ziconotide works differently than opioid pain medications .
• It has only limited ability to cross the blood brain barrier .
• The blood - brain barrier is a kind of membrane that prevents most compounds in the blood from entering the brain .
• Ziconotide binds to N - type calcium channels in the spinal cord .
• This prevents pain signals from reaching the brain . So , the drug is administered via an injection directly into the spinal column .
• The drug can only be delivered by or under the direction of a doctor who injects the medicine into the spinal fluid through a special device ( a procedure called intrathecal infusion ) and should only be used in patients who are considered appropriate for this procedure .
• However , ziconotide have several neurological side effects and may not be suitable for all patients .
